For the past few months, local residents have known that a new Starbucks would be opening in Beckenham. However, we didn’t know exactly where the outlet would be situated. We now know that the coffee shop will be opening on a site on the High Street following the submission of a planning application to change the use of the location.
The company has now put in an application to Bromley Council to change the use of the site from retail to food. The location at 220 High Street was previously occupied by the Kitchen Range store. The store just closed earlier this month, so the site won’t be standing empty for long.
Starbucks had already been advertising for staff even before we knew exactly where the shop would be situated. Local residents noticed a sign in the firm’s Orpington branch as far back as early May, which led to speculation about where exactly the new coffee shop would be located. The company was looking for a store manager, shift supervisors, and baristas for the new Beckenham shop. It is expected that this branch will provide about ten jobs for the local area.
The location is next door to the former Ardec site, which was Beckenham’s oldest shop. This is also set to be given a new life, as a planning application has been put in to change the use of the shop to a restaurant. It is not known what type of restaurant will go there.
What are your feelings about the opening of a Starbucks in Beckenham? Do you think it will be beneficial or would you have preferred a different outlet?
