The Beckenham Academy, which is due to open in September 2016 on a temporary site, has purchased land to construct its permanent building. The development will now go through the planning process. Construction is expected to be completed by 2018.
The Beckenham Academy will be run by the education trust Education for the 21st Century (E21C). The school will accept its first students next September, with lessons being taught at Ravensbourne School on Hayes Lane until the new building is completed.
The new site is located on land that was once owned by the Co-op supermarket and used as a sports ground. The 11-acre site is situated on Balmoral Avenue in Beckenham. It provides excellent access for students, with a location close to the Eden Park and Elmers End train stations as well as numerous bus routes.
Planning permission will need to be granted before the construction work can begin. The planning consultation process is expected to start in March or April of next year.
The application deadline for the September 2016 intake has now passed. The Beckenham Academy will be accepting a mixed group of 180 pupils into their first Year 7. This will make a substantial contribution towards the additional high school places that are required in the area.
Have you applied for a year 7 place for your child this year? Have you found increasing pressure for school places in the area? How do you feel this new school will address matters?
