The quality of Beckenham’s night life has seen the town awarded with the Purple Flag by the Association of Town and City Management.
The award recognises town centres that are seen as offering a gold standard in terms of night life, similar to the Blue Flag awarded to excellent beaches.
The Purple Flag accreditation process highlights towns that have created a vibrant and healthy night-time economy and addressed any potential safety issues.
Bromley Council Councillor Peter Morgan said: “This is not just about bars and pubs, but also includes the many and varied activities which can be found in the evening in Beckenham, including the impressive range of eateries, the cinema and even the choral activities which take place in the church.”
The award is further good news for Beckenham after Bromley Council approved a £4.7 million plan to enhance public facilities in the town last month, on which detailed design work is underway. Work on the plans, which are designed to increase Beckenham’s competiveness, is expected to begin later this year.
The Purple Flag award started in 2009, and 42 towns across the country now have Purple Flag status. The award is supported by a number of organisations, including the Home Office, the Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Service, the Association of Chief Police Officers and alcoholic beverages company Diageo.
